We were in Hawaii (Kauai) the first week in June celebrating my 40th birthday. We had great weather the entire time and our condo was just about as close to perfect as you can get. (See the rainbow view above.)

Christian had a great time. I think he somehow knew we were on vacation. He had mom, dad, and Pop and Gigi all to himself for a whole week. We had 3 beach trips and each time he got more and more accustomed to the water. Finally, the last time, he was just running around in the water chasing things and throwing rocks. We were at Poipu Beach, which is also known as Kiddie Beach because the water is so forgiving. In one of the pictures above you can see the rocks which protect the shore from the huge waves which pound most of Kauai.

We took Christian to his first Luau. At first he was a bit restless and wanted to run around and not eat. But all of a sudden when the dancers started he was enthralled. Especially for the male dancers, because they were louder and more exciting. One dancer did a very loud war dance with stomping and yelling. The climax of the evening was a fire dancer who twirled fire sticks. When we got back to the condo, Christian was running around in his diaper yelling and stomping. His pop got him to throw his pacifiers (or, as Christian calls them, "mimis") across the room and chase them while yelling and stomping. This later came to be known as the "mimi fire dance" since we think he was imitating the dancers from the luau.

Another night, we were walking by the man-made pond at the Hyatt Regency, which had fish in it. Some other people were feeding the fish so we stopped to watch. Christian got right by the edge of the pond and the fish were piled up in a huge bunch, almost so that you couldn't see any water where they were. Someone threw a whole piece of bread to the fish and they smacked it all up with this weird smacking noise, and thrashed and threw water about. Christian was so excited by this scene that he danced and screamed, half laughing, half scared.
